This story about the
recent spread of foraminifera across the ocean seems to fit James Lovelock's "
Gaia hypothesis" that the earth behaves as a large self regulating system. The increased ocean temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere create a changing environment conducive to the creatures which convert the excess carbon dioxide into calcium deposits.
